The best surf school in Cornwall is the Extreme Academy in Watergate Bay. They are the oldest and have the most experienced instructors there. The location is Huge so over crowding is not a problem

I don’t know how close you are to North Devon, but I first went bodyboarding off Croyde Bay (near Barnstaple) when I was about 15 (although this was a while back now!). It’s a really good surfing beach for novices – you can surf most states of the tide, the waves aren’t too frighteningly huge, and there’re lifeguards on duty throughout the day (in the summer, anyway).
There were surf schools there as well, offering gear rental and lessons, but it’s pretty remote for a daytrip (and there wasn’t much else to do but surf or lie on the beach if you went there on holiday). It’s also the kind of place that shuts down out of season – pretty small!
