Skatboarding is a completely different sport. You will only get good at surfing if you surf a lot. The more you surf – the better you get. However you might want to start swimming at a local pool to get in shape for surfing big waves.

Skateboarding will not help you to learn how to surf bigger waves,if that’s what you meant.
One thing skateboarding can help you with is your carves and your pumping.

No skateboard will help you learn how to surf. Any of the other board sports that help develop balance can be beneficial to surfers, but other than that, they are all completely different things. When surfing, you spend much less time actually riding a wave than you do paddling out to the line up, waiting fro a wave, paddling to take off, and then over again. Things that skateboarding can’t help with at all. Surfing is an ocean sport, and the most important thing is to be a confident and competent ocean swimmer. I have been surfing since 1966, and I couldn’t hope to skateboard, ever.

Surfing big waves, the only thing that will get you ready for that is actual experience in the ocean.
Skateboarding will help for balance and building muscle memory as far as pumping the board goes (which has very similar body mechanics to pumping for speed on a surfboard). I own a sector 9 off the wall 2 board, and it has a real ’surfy’ feel to it. The sidewider trucks are good for pumping and carving, I often ride a lot when the waves are small (also a good way to commute short-medium distances and get some blood flowing). It’s not as good practice as surfing, but it will do good to keep your balance sharp.
What others have said were true, get good at swimming and build up your fitness level if your goal is to tackle bigger waves, but through my own experience, skateboarding/carve-boarding is great cross training once you get the basics of surfing down.
