Yeah Lorne is probably the best place to learn to surf along the great ocean road. Torquay is okay too but is very busy during summer, Jan Juc is too busy aswell and most of the people who go their are pretty good surfers. You could try anglesea surfbeach, again thats very busy in summer but what beach isnt. When youre looking for a beach to learn to surf at, you dont want a beach thats too busy and you also dont want a beach thats too empty.
If you are going to be surfing at Lorne you dont have to be as great a swimmer as you would if you were surfing at other places, the waves break in water that is about shoulder height. Still you have to be careful of rips . You still do need to know how to swim though no matter where youre going to surf.
