I think for your first time it is best to take a class at the beach, that way you don’t have to buy anything until you know you like it. YOu can also rent boards at some shops. If you want to buy, you should go to a place like play it again sports so you don’t have to spend too much money before you are good!

Do you have friends that surf? Go surfing with them. Borrow or rent a board and get accustomed to surfing one spot/location. You will need to learn about the waves- how it breaks, why it breaks, how weather and tide effects the waves, where to catch the wave, where to paddle out, the surf etiquette. A friend familiar with the area can teach you these things. Learn how to “duck-dive” your board to get through waves and just practice paddling. Paddling takes a lot of conditioning and getting used to. The standing up part you will come in time. Good Luck!
