Lessons are the best way to start. Lessons can come from a professional instructor, or surfing family members or surfing friends. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don’t want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave. The last thing experienced surfers want is for inexperienced people to just grab a board, rush into the surf and get in our way.
Lessons shorten the learning curve significantly. And they help keep ignorant, un-prepared kooks out of the water and out of the way of more experienced surfers. Lessons can come from friends or family members who surf. I taught my kids and grandkids and a bunch of nieces and nephews. When I started surfing in 1966, there was no such thing as lessons. I wish there had been, I would have improved much faster.

Lessons will be the quickest way to learn the basics but once you can get up and start to ride a wave, the best way to improve is to have the right surfboard and just keep surfing on a regular basis. Depending on where you live, there is probably a surf shop nearby that can direct you to getting some beginner lessons.

You heard it already with some good reasons. Take lessons. Self teaching is not wise at all. You have a much higer risk of getting hurt, killed, hurting or kiling someone else, or getting beat up in the line up by other surfers and locals. Lessons can help you avoid all of those things and you will start surfing a lot faster and safer.

lessons without a doubt. They can either come from a local surf shop or a surfing family member. You will have much more fun after taking lessons. If you self teach yourself you will probably quit.

Lessons all the way.

Always take lessons when you start. They will help speed up the learning curve and they also ensure you are not a hazard to other surfers.
