I also live in Manchester, I had a day lesson in newquay in very rough seas and mastered the basics of surfing on white water (the frothy bit).
You should be able to pick up the basics within 1 or 2 lessons. I have also surfed in scotland and can verify that the wet suits are excellant, cold water should not put you off. You can get the train to Edinburgh for a tenner each way and from edinburgh get train or bus to dunbar, about 30 miles east of Edinburgh. Search coast 2 coast surf school from visit scotland .com
A few people have recommended scarborough as the nearest place to Manchester for surfing. I’ve never been to scraborough but if you speak to their tourist information centre they should be able to put you in touch with a surf school.
A days lesson will last about 5 hours with a break depending on the tides and will cost around 50 quid.
Surfing is not that dangerous, you are tied to your board which acts as a massive float. There can be some awful accidents. Mainly heads smashed on rocks. Surf instructors teach on familiar beaches daily so they know the rip currents very well and all are trained life guards. You have to be confident in water which you will be if you are considering surfing.
I would recommend learning to snow board at chill factor’e, the extra cost of snow boarding over surfing will be balanced by the cost of travelling saved. People who are good at one board sport tend to be good at all board sports despite the different method of boarding. You will also see that if you can learn to snow board in one day you will learn to surf in a day.
It’s a pain that all surfing opportunities are around 2 hours or more from manchester.

Your kind of between NE Enlgand and SW Wales. The NE (Tynemouth etc) is good, but cold and not great for learning. Your best bet is ‘Walkin On Water Surf School’ (google with ‘wales’), is a mobile surf school in West Wales.

if you wana learn by next year then surf every single day because you wont learn just like that i can tell you that. One of the hardest and most dangerous sports out there is surfing.
    Good luck and be safe
