Take lessons at Cove Beach in Kihea. It’s just north of Wailea and South of Lahaina. It has very gentle rolling waves and the water is waist/chest deep for about 200 yards out so you could even walk your board when you get tired. There’s a few surf shops right there that give lessons.

You should definitely take a lesson. Depending on where you are staying, some hotels will offer lessons right out in front. Others, you’ll have to drive to a different part of the island. Even if you do have to drive, you can probably still make reservations at your hotel.
You can also just head into town and ask around at the local surf shops if they offer lessons or where you can take lessons.
