Tourist beaches are usually good. Don't go anywhere that looks full of losers. The ones that "think" they are good usually are the people to stay clear of. If you are not taking lessons and just grab a board and paddle out, you are more than likely to get beat up because you might not follow surf etiquette. For example, if you just paddle out through the peak of the wave, ditch your board, and snake the locals in every wave that comes your wave, you will get beat up. Lessons help you avoid the locals. So simply said, take some lessons, respect the locals, and wait your turn in the line up. It depends.
