If I Went On Vacation To Learn How To Surf, Would I Get Beat Up By The Local Surfers?

Sounds like a stupid question, but I’m serious. I’ve heard stories about guys getting beat up by other surfers for “invading” their piece of the ocean. Can’t we all just share and get along or is this a real possibility?

Not if you start off by taking lessons. Instructors or surf camps will take to to nice, friendly ‘beginner’ beaches. After the lessons, you will have learned most of the inside information you need to stay out of trouble.
Also, you won’t really learn how to surf on vacation (unless you have a month or so off). You will learn some basics, and get the feel of surfing, but it takes lots more time in the water than a week or two. But, you will have fun!

It depends. If you are taking lessons, you will know what you are doing and have an instructor with you, so they wont beat you up. If you are not taking lessons and just grab a board and paddle out, you are more than likely to get beat up because you might not follow surf etiquette. For example, if you just paddle out through the peak of the wave, ditch your board, and snake the locals in every wave that comes your wave, you will get beat up. Lessons help you avoid the locals. So simply said, take some lessons, respect the locals, and wait your turn in the line up.

Just don’t go to any of the good surf spots and you will be fine. Tourist beaches are usually good. Don’t go anywhere that looks full of losers. The ones that “think” they are good usually are the people to stay clear of. Usually, if you have surf etiquette the locals will be happy to share their spot and might even give you a few tips.

ive never seen a learner get beat up, it just doesn’t happen. ive seen punches thrown and serious aggro but thats between guys that know what they are doing. maybe dont surf any big name breaks until you are fully good, have fun and keep a smile!

As long as you go to a “beginner” beach and you have a good attitude then you won’t.

Doubt it. Depends where you go. If you are just learning, I really really doubt it.
