How Did You Learn How To Surf?

I started out being a ‘waterman’ (or rather a ‘waterboy’). I swam, body surfed and body boarded (no such thing as boogie boards back then). I was swimming in the ocean and back bay from the time I was in first or second grade. When I was around 14, I got my first surfboard, a 9′6″ with an aluminum skeg! I taught myself, and got tips from my buddies who were already surfing, and from older guys who were nice to us. And of course. lots of trial and error, and imitating the guys we saw in surf magazines. In between surf sessions, I sailed, fished and scuba dived. But, that was 1967, and I wouldn’t recommend this method today.
Go to a good local surf shop, and seek out lessons. And learn on a rented board, don’t waste money buying one, until you are sure you really want to surf. And do us all a favor. Make sure you are at home in the ocean before you even start. There are already way too many dangerous people in the water. dangerous to themselves and other surfers. Don’t join their ranks.

i rented foam boards for a while then 2 weeks ago i rented a 6′4 fish board and it was like impossible to ride and stand up on. After like an hour in the water i decided that i had to go like a inch more up on the board and i was like much more balanced lol.

Make sure you get a longboard and take some lessons to learn the basics.
