Can You Surf In San Francisco?

I’m thinking about going to college in San Francisco next year. I want to learn to surf while at college I guess as a hobby are the waves good enough to surf there?

SF has many surfers including those hearty souls who surf right under the Golden Gate Bridge!
As others have said you will need a wet suit. Even in the summer the Pacific is cold in Northern California. SF is nothing like Southern California…thankfully.

Great surf available all along the Peninsula and as far South as Monterey. Maverick’s beach is just a few miles from The City and a world championship contest is held there every Winter. (20 to thirty foot swells generated by offshore storms) There is even some decent surf on parts of Ocean Beach, right IN San Francisco, but the entire stretch is known for some pretty powerful rip tides. Mostly in the three to five foot range.
But the waters all along Northern California are numbingly cold and a wet suit is the uniform of the day, all year round.

yes as others have mentioned. The SF area is also home to the Maverick’s Surf Competition every year pending weather and waves. down in Half Moon Bay.
most people surf at ocean beach or go down to Santa Cruz or Pacifica.http://www.maverickssurf.com/Home/

Yes, but they are not really beginner waves. Pacifica’s Linda Mar beach (aka: Taco Bell beach as a Taco Bell is right there on the beach!) is a good mellow place to learn. Note: you will need a wetsuit.
Pacifica is very close to SF.

Yeah down at Ocean Beach next to the Cliff House, you may run into Chris Issac…
