Is This Type Of Computer Too Much For What I Want To Do?

I am a non gamer. In the future, maybe, I would like to probably play a game or two. However, I am sure it wouldn’t be frequent at all.
I know what you guys are asking. What do I use the computer for? Well, I like to basically surf the net. I like to download music and videos. I like to play card games like poker stars, full tilt poker, yahoo spades, etc and I love to listen to music via the computer :bounce: .
With all of these things in mind, do I really need an i7 or is it best to get a quad core? Here is the computer I have in mind. Is is overkill??
HP Pavilion Elite m9600t series
Operating system Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-920 processor (2.66GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache with QPI Technology)
Memory 6GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [3 DIMMs]
Hard drive 500GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
Graphics card 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4350 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter]
Primary optical drive LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
Networking Integrated 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) Ethernet, No wireless LAN
Front Productivity Ports 15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, 1394, audio
Sound Card Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Speakers Logitech X-540 5.1 stereo speakers
Keyboard and Mouse HP multimedia keyboard and HP premium laser mouse
Productivity software Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
Security software Norton Internet Security(TM) 2009 – 15 month
I am trying to figure out if I am over doing it. If I am, their is a quad core computer from hp that has very similar configurations at 2.66 ghz. All I want is a fast computer that will allow me to do the above effortlessly.

SV, when we were down there (Montreal Canada here), we left from a tour bus terminus near a large hotel. The name of the bus company at the time was Sunshine Coaches. It took us to a place called Airlie Beach (man wasn’t it a distance). The driver stopped across the road from the this massive resort, where you could have camping (tent) accommodation, Caravan which we took for only $58.00 per night I think it was, or the main building. Of a morning you can get a bus to the actual jetty and get one of those tour ferries. We if you wanted to swim on the reef there was time provided, and you would be really missing out on something if you don’t. Not only do you can you take the reef tour, but you can also go to the different resort tours, there is one that does (and I hope I get this right) Hayman Island, South Mole, and the one we fell in love with Daydream Island.

Fly from Brisbane to Cairns (BNE to CNS) and there are tours there. About 2 hours flight. If you don’t want to scuba, you can take the snorkeling day tours which are very nice.
All the tours out of Cairns are nice. You can also enjoy the tropical rainforests too. Plenty of accommodation too.
The Whitsunday Island area not far from Mackay has nice sailing tours. You can fly there from Brisbane too.

You need to go to Cairns and find tour out there for Great Barrier Reef.
Also you would better to fly from Brisbane to Cairns by Jetstar or Virgin Blue or you need to drive there around 12 hours.
There are many tours for Great Barrier Reef online, you can book it in advance with special discount: http://www.partner.viator.com/en/6806/Ca…
One more thing, try white water rafting, it’s great !
Enjoy your trip!

Fly to cairns>>its about 1000 miles or 1600 kilometres.
Whilst there Take the train trip to Kuranda in the ranges behind Cairns.
maybe come back by the cable car.
OZ is BIG.
great Britain will fit in to Queensland alone 6 times, and in the NT there was a Cattle station BIGGER than the state of Texas in the USA,
Think LONG distances. Have fun

You will have to fly from Brisbane to Cairns. (2-3 hour flight)
Then you can go out to the Great Barrier Reef – there are many options/tours to choose from.
See http://www.greatadventures.com.au to give you an idea.

If you want to see the Great Barrier Reef you would be better off staying in Cairns and organising your tour from there. If you are staying in Brisbane for most of your holiday you can get cheap flights to Cairns.

that computer is overkill for you. You can get away with a good dual core cpu, 2-4GB of Ram(4 preferably for vista), and the video card isn’t bad for you. do you need extreme sound? Are you actually gonna use the 5.1 surround? onnoard audio is usually fine for just a casual listener. the sound card will help if you actually use the 5.1 speakers.
A laser mouse? Opticals work just fine. Microsoft works? its just bloat ware. you can get OpenOffice for free and is better. Norton antivirus? not bad, but AVG, avast, etc are just as good for free.
The card reader is a nice feature. you can use friends and others camera cards to exchange pics.
Save yourself a few dollars and get something not so fancy. If you feel that your computer will be doing a lot, like you will be running every single program you have at one time, then get yourself a quad core. But if you are only gonna be doing a couple things at a time, go with a cheaper dual core. (ie. web, music, writing, video at the same time) dual core will handle it just fine.
Thats just a few things to throw out there. Good luck.

I think what is way too much. A core duo or core quad duo with 3+ g ram would be great.

Lots of good answers above.
Australia is the same size as the 48 states. The southern end of the Great Barrier Reef is just north of Brisbane, but the best part is off shore at Cairns.
Lots of people do not realize that.

The GBR is over 12 hours DRIVE from Brisbane so of course there are no tours – if you are from the US – the distance is the same from the coast of Virginia to the coast of Florida

For what you’re doing, you wouldn’t need more than a $300 computer/laptop.
You should get something like this
Intel C2D E8400 @ 3.0Ghz $175
500GB Hard drive $50
9600GT $50
Any Dvd Burner $30
4GB of memory $50-75
500W Powersupply $75
Any motherboard price around $100.
For the above specs, (which is just a little under what I have) you should be multitasking like crazy. That kind of system is for Video encoding, editing, 3D Modelling, Photoshop, etc. Except for the GPU which is okay for some recent games at medium settings

All I can say is, if your not a gamer then that is more than overkill, a quad core would be too. Unless you plan on playing Crysis any time soon, that computer would be overkill for most games too. Of course the speed will always be helpful, but for what you say you wanna do, you could save yourself over $1000 I reckon and get something that runs all that easily.
That HP computer sounds like it is slightly better suited to what you wanna do, but if you wanna be future proofed for a few more years go for the i7.
Another thing I have to recommend is going to a few computer stores where they build custom computers and see if they can make the same thing cheaper ( saved my friend $200 making his computer)
Good Luck
