The Maldives is known as one of the world’s greatest dive destinations and almost the whole country can be dived. The island of Maldives is a low lying country and the highest point is only 2.4m above sea level.
The Maldives is made up of 1,190 islands stretches 800km from North to South, diving can be done from day trips or liveaboards. Out of the 1,190 islands only around 200 have people on them and most visitors will spend time on the 89 resort islands.
Visitors will land at the capital called Male from where they can take a sea plane what they call an air taxi or a boat if you’re staying at North Male or South Male. The capital is a nice place to see the lifestyle of the locals but most people just land and move on to their resort.
There really are thousands of dive sites around the Maldives and the locals have developed an extensive vocabulary for the various types of reef islands. A faru, for example will mean the reef sticks out the water at low tide, while a falhu is a reef that encircles a lagoon. A thila is a coral pinnacle that does not quite reach the surface.
The diving is all year round, with live-aboards doing different routes depending on the winds. Normally one side of the Maldives as good visibility while at the same time the other side has poor visibility, but the murkier plankton rich waters are where you will see the whale sharks and manta rays.
Dangerous surfing at a crazy slab. Insane wipeouts and injuries….. Bra Boys’ Koby Abberton, Richie Vasculik, Evan Faulks and Mark Matthews take on the “unsurfable” waves in Botany, which break over the rocky headland. Check out some awesome wipeouts and tubes!
I’m really interested in surfing and really eager to try it. My friend has offered to teach me to surf, but i think i’m gonna get a professional help. So here are my question
1) What basic thing should you learn (beside swimming) before going to surf (picking the board, basic movement, etc)?
2) Can you recommend a good surfing school in LA where they lend you a surf board (i don’t have any board yet)?
3) How long does it usually take to learn surfing basics?
Thank you
I was at pipeline masters in 2004 and was given a snapped board by a surfer in the comp. I went on the get this board signed by Kelly Slater (8 times world champ), Sunny Garcia (six Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing titles), Bruce Irons (Eddie Aikau Big Wave Winner), Pancho Sullivan, Tom Curren, Jamie O’Brien (04 – winner), Kalani Robb, Layne Beachley (7 times women world champ), Cory Lopez, and Paulo Moura. I was very lucky to get this. I am not planning on selling this, just was wondering how much it would go for. Thanks in advanced.
